Disease Status of New Patients at Free Homeless Clinic in Seoul Area

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate disease status of new patients at our free homeless clinic in 2011 and to show difference of health status between the new patient group and the former patient group of homeless.

Methods: The study subjects were 711 new patients visiting our clinic in 2011. The medical records of patients were reviewed and analyzed by disease categories.

Results: The number of patient who had muscloskeletal diseases was 229, the highest(32.2%). The number
of patient with respiratory diseases including common cold was 201(28.3%), cardiovascular diseases including hypertension was 168(23.6%), and gastrointestinal diseases was 155(21.8%). On the other hand, otolaryngologic diseases, urologic diseases, and oncologic diseases had a low distribution, less than 5%. The percentage of the number of visit to clinic showed a relative increase in patient group with cardiovascular diseases(7.2% to 15.9%), endocrine diseases(3.8% to 9.8%), neurologic and psychiatric diseases(3.9% to 6.8%), and urologic disease(0.7% to 2.1%), when compared to the medical record in 2003.

Conclusion: The proportion of chronic diseases in homeless people is increasing steadily and as a result, death rate and complications due to chronic diseases in homeless people are expected to show an increase. Therefore, homeless people do need to be given more medical care on chronic disease than they now have.
